Glenmore Challenge Report 2018

The Glenmore valley was a flood today with baking sunshine and runners all taking on the Glenmore Challenge, and with the introduction of the 10k challenge, alongside the 10m, proved a success with the number of participants at an all time high this year!! The 10k runners took on the new challenging course and the 10milers took on the gruelling hills of Glenmore, with the tar melting below their feet at times, but a very welcome gentle breeze met them at the long woman’s grave until the finish line at Mullaghbouy community centre. A big thank you for all the support along the way especially the water guns and hoses!! There was a very strong turnout for athletics clubs both north and south which is reflected in the results, thank you very much for supporting our annual Glenmore challenge 10m & 10k road race.

A massive congratulations and admiration for Glenmore senior athlete Terry Steeples (Company Quarter Master Sergeant Terry Steeples) who brought the Glenmore Challenge to South Lebanon!! Terry was the main instigator in the organisation of this international event while serving with the 112th Irish Infantry Battalion under the command of Lt Col Kilmartin in South Lebanon. The challenge took place at the same time as the home event with over 150 troops taking part and all proceeds going to The Maria Goretti Foundation in Lordship. There was a link set up for all runners at the home Challenge to view photos of this event in the Mullaghbouy community centre.

We are very grateful to our main sponsor, Greenore Port, as well as Carton Die, Keenan Timber Frame, O Connor roofing for their support as well as our mile sponsors: Stephen O’Connor Loss Assessor, Barrys Shop, Top Omeath Fuels, O Connor roofing, Lordship, Gerry Rice, Animal Pregnancy scanning, Aidan McCoy, AMC loss assessors & surveyors, Appletree Dental Care, Newry, O Neill Plant Hire, Brendan Reid Sportswear & Visit Carlingford.com. Thanks also to Tidy Towns Carlingford for the use of their sustainable cups which kept the 10km runners cool and to Joe White for the use of his field for parking, Mullaghbuoy hall & the chilled tunes from the Booze Brothers & their special guest Anne Mc Evoy.

The running of an event like this requires the help of an army of volunteers from the ladies at registration, the delicious food from the catering crew to those who stewarded & provided smiling encouragement to weary runners, locals who came out , clapped, encouraged and hosed down the baked runners to the national school children who designed the posters & those who put them up, those who publicised the event as well as Sean & Mary McGeown who are always there to help. To all the clubs and runners who participated, we salute you, it was a tough one. We thank you all.

Roll on next
